How to price landscaping
Landscaping installs are priced per square foot of area (or per plant), not per hour. Mulch runs about $0.50–$1.25/sq ft installed, sod about $1–$2/sq ft, and new planting beds $10–$25/sq ft depending on prep, edging, and plant density.
Always set a project minimum — mobilizing a crew and equipment for a tiny job costs the same overhead as a medium one. Add for haul-away, grading, irrigation tie-ins, and difficult access.
Design-heavy work (full redesigns) commands a premium because the value is in the plan, not just the labor. Charge for the design, then the install.
Frequently asked questions
How much does landscaping cost per square foot?⌄
It depends on the work: mulch installs run about $0.50–$1.25/sq ft, sod $1–$2/sq ft, and new planting beds $10–$25/sq ft. Tree and shrub installs are usually priced per plant ($50–$300 each).
How do I price a mulch job?⌄
Multiply the bed area by your installed rate ($0.50–$1.25/sq ft is typical, covering material + labor at ~3" depth), and apply a project minimum. The calculator does this for your state.
Should I charge for landscape design separately?⌄
Yes. The plan has value independent of the install. Many pros bill design as a flat fee or credit it toward the project if the customer books the install.
