How to price a deck build
Decks are priced per square foot installed, and the material drives the number: pressure-treated runs $15–$35/sq ft, cedar $20–$45, composite $30–$60, and PVC or tropical hardwoods $40–$80. Those rates include framing, fasteners, and labor.
Add for height (elevated decks need bigger footings and stairs), railings and lighting, demolition of an old deck, and permits and inspections. Elevation and railing detail are where a "simple" deck quote goes sideways.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to build a deck per square foot?⌄
Installed: pressure-treated $15–$35/sq ft, cedar $20–$45, composite $30–$60, and PVC/hardwood $40–$80, including framing and labor. Railings, stairs, and elevation add to it.
Why is a composite deck more expensive?⌄
Composite and PVC materials cost far more than pressure-treated lumber, but they last longer with less maintenance — which is exactly how you sell the upgrade to the customer.
